Geo Walks in Sneem | Guided Geology Walks in Kerry
How the Sneem views came to be. Discover 390 million years in 60 minutes.
Sneem is a beautiful village , on the ring of Kerry amidst rocks, rivers and mountains around it. It records ancient deserts, mountain building and the Ice Age. Join a gentle guided walk through the village and learn how to read the landscape.
What you'll discover
Ancient rocks. Sneem's story starts around 390 million years ago in a desert basin, and you can see it in village old stone walls, buildings and graveyards.
A mountain-building event. This area holds the evidence of the Variscan event, when continents collided to form Pangea and pushed up mountains.
Ice Age traces. Ice from the Dunkerron Mountains spread west across Sneem. It left behind moraines, corrie lakes and the hummocky hills that give the area its shape.
The view of the Dunkerron Mountains, with the story of how they were formed.

Your guide
Hi, I'm Ravit. I have lived and explored the hills around Sneem since 2021. I have a geology degree from The Open University. I love telling geological stories and making Geology relatable and fun. I explore the hills regularly with the Sneem Walking Club and Aláind Walking.
What to bring
Comfortable walking shoes
A waterproof jacket, because Kerry weather changes quickly
Good to know
What if it's cloudy?
Walks go ahead in most weather. If the peaks are hidden, we focus on what's close at hand: river boulders, stone walls and the rocks of the village itself. We only cancel for weather warnings, and you'll get a full refund if we do.
Are children welcome?
Yes. The walk is easy and suits families.
Can I bring my dog?
Yes on a lead.
Is the route accessible?
The route includes few steps, road and established trail.
